Carole & Tuesday (2019) Detailed Anime Review
Director: Shinchiro Watanabe
Studio: Bones
Genre: Music
Construction Year: 2019
Number of Episodes: 24
Anime Rating: 10/7
For now, we have the last anime of Shinchiro Watanabe, the name behind the anime series that I found very successful such as Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Michiko to Hatchin, Sakamichi no Apollon: Carole and Tuesday. In the series, which is closer to Sakamichi no Apollon’s style, we witness two young girls coming together and launching their musical careers.
Carole Stanley is an orphan girl who came from Earth to Mars as a migrant. She continues her life by working in day jobs and trying to pay her rent, and trying to perform the music she is passionate about. Tuesday Simmons was born on Mars into a wealthy family. His mother, Valerie Simmons, is even running for president on Mars. But wealth does not bring happiness because his mother does not approve of him playing the guitar and music. When this is the case, Tuesday gathers all her courage and runs away from home and comes to Alba City. Here, as a twist of fate, he sees Carole, who is trying to make music on the bridge, and the first step of a great friendship is taken. Tuesday starts staying at Carole’s house, and they set out to create their music career out of nothing.
I was surprised when I learned that Carole & Tuesday first took place on Mars because the world presented to us is a world where artificial intelligence has come a long way rather than the red Mars we are used to. According to the universe of the anime, humanity has started to live on Mars for fifty years, and as far as I understand from the anime, things are not going well in the world. I say I understand because the background information about Mars and Earth is not mentioned much. Our focus is more on Carole and Tuesday.
The anime is broadcast on Netflix as 12 + 12, and the second 12 episodes, which I can call the second season, were released on December 24. However, it will have been published in our country on this date since all the chapters are available on the net. When I finished the first twelve, I continued from a different source. First of all, the anime is a musical anime. It’s a cute anime without too much drama, without drowning in romance, and embellished with little comedy elements. If you like romantic music, it is possible to fall in love with the series. If you can’t connect to the songs like me, well, the point I gave is obvious. The only song that impressed me was Loneliest Girl, and it has already taken its place on my phone. The other songs are definitely not bad, but as I said, it’s a bit of a matter of style and taste. That’s why I can say that Carole & Tuesday’s score is very personal. So if I fell in love with the songs, who knows what the score would be. Oh, and the Fucking Bullshit song was legendary :D
Let me state again that there is a Shinchiro Watanabe anime before us. So the man who gave us Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. To be frank, it is very different in genre and at a certain level like these animes in terms of quality, but in terms of content, it actually cannot come close. In terms of music, Watanabe shows in every anime, and this is also the case in terms of music style, but I repeat, it didn’t bother me much.
You can’t see the 3D, CGI-style drawings we’re used to, especially from today’s Netflix anime, in this anime. There is a more “old school” style in front of us, and the drawings are really nice. Especially the dance choreographies are very successful. However, it did not escape my attention that the same scenes were used frequently in some scenes. I mean, let’s say the audience will react. The same section is always presented to us. No gestures, no claps. We look at the picture and the same picture. The voiceovers are excellent. Most characters already have two voice actors. One is a normal sayyisu, and the other is the singer, and most of the singers are foreigners. So it’s not Japanese. Here you can understand why English songs are sung so smoothly. The only thing that draws my attention is that the music of some characters is very unrelated to each other. For example, the character Pyotr or the character named Skip. The way they sing with their visuals and normal speech seemed oddly disproportionate to me. Maybe it’s because I’m used to their normal voices, but in the end, the two voices are very different.
Carole & Tuesday is a nice anime. I cannot say that it is a masterpiece, and I cannot say that I enjoyed the music very much, but it was enjoyable to watch the determination and struggle of two young girls. Check it out if you like music anime. Technically very successful. And if you like its content, it won’t be better than you :) By the way, there are a few days left until 2020. Anime-review is also about to enter its 11th year. I hope it worked for you (more on that later) to create a useful library for no profit.
