We are doing the first review of 2021 with the Dorohedero anime. The strangely named anime, which can be watched on Netflix, takes place in a distant and post-apocalyptic world, more precisely in two different realms. In the meantime, Dorohedoro Season 2 is eagerly awaited. The first is the realm where people live, called the “Hole”, and the second is the realm where sorcerers live. Although the inhabitants of both realms are humans at first glance, sorcerers are described as a different species. The caste system also stands out in the world of sorcerers. Those with high power to create magic, called smoke, live in wealth and abundance, while those with low smoke, or even none, live in poverty. Smoke, that is, those with weak magic power try to increase their smoke with various medical methods or drugs. Also, the power of each wizard is different. Hence, those whose magic power is rare are popular wizards. These sorcerers make their way into the realm of humanity by throwing a door to practice — to develop their magical powers and use their magic on humans, using them as guinea pigs.

For this reason, many deformed people in the human realm have been subjected to magic. Oh, didn’t people oppose this? At the time, yes, but because of their inability to cope, they bowed.

We meet a girl named Nikaido accompanying her with a crocodile head named Caiman in the anime that appears with a quick opening. We soon learn that a sorcerer spelled caiman and his head turned into a crocodile. As if it wasn’t enough, he lost all his memory. Nikaido found caiman, and their friendship became stronger day by day, and together they began to look for wizards who spell on Caiman. Inside Caiman’s mouth is someone else that he thinks of as his true self, and he shows him by putting the heads of the sorcerers he captured into his mouth. The person in the mouth, on the other hand, replies to Caiman’s misfortune, “This is not the case.” So what do Caiman and Nikaido do to these wizards they caught? Of course, they cut them into pieces and kill them :) Of course, this situation will start to attract attention in the magician world, and things will start to get mixed up.

In the anime, which lasts for 12 episodes, we witness Caiman and Nikaido’s adventure, which includes a lot of blood and brutality, but also includes a lot of black humour. By the way, when I searched for the meaning of Dorohedoro, I came across various assumptions, and there is also a pun according to the spelling of the Japanese alphabet Kanji. The general view is that it means “From Mud to Mud”. After giving this brief information, I would like to state that the anime does not shy away from anything in terms of content. Torn limbs, blood, strange creatures, demons and strange places and places, both the world of humans and the world of sorcerers. In this regard, the anime has successfully created its own different universe. It makes us wonder who Caiman really is, but sometimes episodes progress very quickly and put a question mark on the question mark. You just hang on because it’s half over. I mean, the plot is complicated, and the characters are more in the foreground. In other words, we see that even characters that seem very insignificant at first sight appear and gain depth in every episode. But there is little trouble with the progression of the story.

The drawings of the anime are different and unique, just like their content. For example, when you see Nikaido’s face drawing from the pictures, it looks like it dates from the eighties. When you look at Caiman, it’s a facialized crocodile face. When we look at the general and the movements, the five stars are number ten :) The quality and aesthetics of the collision scenes offer a pleasant viewing. In terms of the anime’s music and sounds, I don’t have much to say. As everything is strange, the opening piece is also weird, and the closing pieces are also variable. I didn’t like it enough to want to listen all the time, but I can never say bad.

As I said, Dorohedoro comes up with a final episode in the season finale style, and then thoroughly mixed events are left unfinished. My only consolation is that the anime’s 18-year-long manga is finished and it is one of the rare anime that can make a real finale. I am among those who anticipate the second season with curiosity, but there is no information about a second season yet. We will wait and see now.
